cbapter one: cbapter one: A Night ir) tbe Life of ... Someone had been busy causing some spectacular trouble over the last couple of weeks. On August 22nd, a two-man police patrol called for backup to deal with an armed mugger who’d been distressing the residents of Aurora, Illinois. When the second car arrived, the four officers followed the man into a small network of service alleys, and then vanished. They were found two hours later by a nervous fellow officer investigating their disappearance, who eventually had to be taken care of. The mugger was splayed out in the middle of an alley with his eviscerated intestines draped around him in a particularly tasteless imitation of a crime scene chalk outline. One officer was impaled on each of the mugger’s limbs, with the hand (or foot) having been forced down the officer’s throat to the shoulder (or midthigh). As an apparent afterthought, all ten eyes had been removed and piled inside the mugger’s gaping mouth. The chief of police obediently ordered a news blackout regarding the atrocity, and although rumors spread, no one really knew anything for sure. But the next incident had been impossible to cover up. Four days later, a number of individuals broke in to the local zoo and slaughtered approximately half of the assorted sheep, goats, pigs, foxes, otters, llamas and elks that were available.
