Caine’s Chosen
Chapter One: The Kings of the Kindred I have good advice and sound wisdom; I have insight, I have strength.
By me kings reign, and rulers decree what is just; By me rulers rule, and nobles, all who govern rightly.
Proverbs 8:14-16 “Our history is our guide,” a Ventrue maxim states.
Bound by tradition and precedent, the Ventrue rely on their history more than any other clan. They cherish every aspect of it — even (or especially) the parts embellished or fabricated completely. Theirs is a history of conquest, achievement and brilliant tactics. The fact that more than a few of the most esteemed makers of that history still walk the Earth tonight only heightens their reverence for the past. The clan’s history justifies their claim to aristocracy. It supports their agendas, it settles their internal disputes, and it causes endless debate.
Without it, they would be as a ship without a rudder.
This, then, is the clan’s history as consensus. Some dispute individual portions. Members of other clans sometimes dismiss the whole story as pure fiction from beginning to end. The Ventrue stand by its every word, and few can compare with them when it comes to research and the collection of their own history. Not even mythical Caine could know what truly happened, but it is maybe more important to realize that this information is what the Ventrue believe took place, a gradual blur from legend to history. In the end, all that matters to Chapter One: The Kings of the Kindred them is that their innate greatness resonates through the ages and reverberates in their wake.
Caine’s Chosen The Ventrue claim to fame begins, quite literally, in the beginning. The most reliable sources state it firmly. Caine ordered his childer to beget the Third Generation; he specifically chose [Ventrue] as the first.
In fact, he demanded that Ynosch Embrace [Ventrue], only to sweep the fledgling Kindred from his sire’s sway and place it by his side. The young [Ventrue] became Caine’s closest advisor and confidant. Therefore, from the moment the Third Generation sprang into being — which is to say, the moment the entire conceit of “clans” came to be — Ventrue could lay claim to have been the eldest them all, a claim to which many still cling in these modern nights.
For a long while, [Ventrue] served at Caine’s side, helping him rule over Kindred and kine in the gilded First City. As befit their baser natures, the others of the Third Generation grew jealous of [Ventrue] and his position, particularly the over-ambitious and cunning
