Caine: The Dark Father
The Progenitor • The Wanderer • The Fisher King
Introduction
Caine is the mythic progenitor of all vampires in the World of Darkness, cursed by God for the murder of his brother Abel. Exiled to the Land of Nod, he became the first Kindred through Lilith's blood rite or divine malediction—accounts vary by Noddist sect. Revered by the Sabbat as their Sword, denied by the Camarilla as myth, Caine embodies pride, loneliness, and the Beast's eternal struggle.
His return heralds Gehenna, where he will judge his errant childer. Whether Caine is a literal being who still walks the earth, a metaphor for the vampiric condition, or something far stranger, remains one of the great unanswered questions of the World of Darkness. Every vampire who has ever existed carries a fragment of his curse in their blood.
The Kindred world is shaped by his shadow. The very structure of the Generations — and with it, the power hierarchy of all vampiric society — traces directly back to him. Clans, sects, and covenants define themselves in relation to his myth: the Sabbat claim to follow his will, the Camarilla deny his relevance, and the Noddists spend centuries debating his words.
Appearance
Canon descriptions of Caine are deliberately sparse. He is marked by the Mark of Caine — a brand seared into his flesh by God, visible to all supernatural creatures. A swirling dark aura of murder-power surrounds him, warping reality in his presence.
Fan and LARP depictions commonly portray him as a tall, bearded ancient with a glowing sigil on his forehead, wild unkempt hair, and either regal robes befitting the king of the First City or the ragged garb of an eternal wanderer. His eyes burn with a mixture of profound sorrow and terrible pride. His aura is said to warp the perceptions of those nearby, making the air feel heavy with age and dread.

History & Timeline
Lore Variants: The Luciferian frames the murder as prideful delusion; V5 softens mythic edges but retains the core narrative.
Personality & Philosophy
The Dark Father
Creator and innovator. Built the First City, taught agriculture and law. Embraced childer out of loneliness, seeking connection in eternity.
The Wanderer
Eternal exile. Rejected by God, abandoned by Lilith, betrayed by childer. Walks the earth alone, a Fisher King seeking Golconda's impossible redemption.
The Tyrant
Judge and destroyer. Cursed the Antediluvians with clan flaws. His return at Gehenna promises not mercy but reckoning for millennia of disobedience.
Caine is a prideful rebel against God, yet profound loneliness drives his every action. He Embraced childer to ease his isolation, yet their inevitable betrayals haunt him. He is cunning (he tricked the Crone), an innovative ruler, and a remorseful king who may yet seek the impossible peace of Golconda.
